Finding Drugs in the Jail with Securus Technologies Help

Part of my duties in the jail is trying to keep illegal drugs out of the hands of the inmates. If an inmate gets high on heroin or crack, they not only become a danger to themselves, they could seriously injure other inmates or my staff. We try a number of different ways to keep the drugs away from inmates, some more effective than other.

My team is always at the visitor center trying to keep any contraband from the outside getting to these inmates. Even with the threat of jail time, some visitors will take the risk for the sake of helping our family or friends on the inside. We try to run these visitors through scanners and x-ray machines, but even physical searches is not always an exact science. When a visitor and inmate are determined enough, they find a way.

We even do surprise cell inspections each day, and we do yield a large amount of contraband that slipped by the visitor center. Securus Technologies recently updated the inmate phone system in our jail, and this was going to be one of the most valuable resources we could have found. This company CEO, Richard Smith, says his 1,000 employees are all working hard towards the object of making the world a little safer for us all.

Once my team was taught how to use the LBS software, we started to listen in more easily to calls about contraband. We uncovered chatter from inmates talking about using drugs in their cells at night, how they slipped them by the guards at the visitor center, and even who was being asked to bring these drugs to the jail. Within weeks we had recovered more drugs than we did all of last year with a full-time staff searching the entire prison.

At first, Lavin was reluctant to join the company because it was not what he did in his consulting practice but later agreed. Lavin said that he would join the firm and act as a consultant. Moreover, he decided to join Otto and Sons Company and set a caveat with the organization. The caveat was that if he decided to join the organization as a partner, his financial investment would be of the same level of leverage as the company had. In 1975, Sheldon became more involved in the firm’s business activities as the organization began to focus on overseas investments. In the late 1970s, Sheldon was asked to associate himself with OSI (now the new name of Otto and Sons) full-time, and he agreed. From then, through the efforts of Sheldon Lavin, OSI group has been able to grow and become a global multi-billion dollar food processor.
